Meet the Teacher
Anna Kiss, COMT
We ALL have experience with the trained technician shortage; training a technician takes time and resources. Training in the office is usually not conducive and often will take away precious resources during a busy clinical practice day.
Eyes Rock is here to help! My courses combine my formal training program background with what the on-the-job trained technician needs to learn, particularly science-wise. I'll teach tips and tricks to ensure technicians perform their skills correctly.
It's easy enough to train a person to click the button, but teaching the science behind the skill takes a particular person with creative teaching skills, advanced knowledge, and excellent administration skills. That’s what I bring to the table. I love breaking down complicated concepts into small building blocks! Take my courses to learn the science behind the skill. I can’t wait to see you in class.

I can’t wait for you to join me in Eyes Rock: Refraction Optics
One of my WHYs for becoming an education entrepreneur was to serve many more students across North America and the world. I was *lucky enough* and incredibly privileged to attend Georgetown University’s Medical Ophthalmic Technologist Training Program. I moved to DC in the summer of 2002 [remind me to share sometime about my experience of taking a U-Haul truck past the Pentagon at night]. I began work after college, with Qiagen Sciences (quality assurance on single-stranded DNA) and then Tetracore, Inc. (extracted DNA from some really cool stuff!). After a couple of years, I was restless and began researching what was next in my education. I knew I loved instrumentation and analysis from my chemistry degree, but I was afraid forensics would pigeonhole me…with some career-personality testing I came upon ophthalmic assisting and a training program was nearby in DC. It was incredibly nerve-wracking to be interviewed by Dr. Peter Y. Evans, the founder of the ophthalmic assistant career, but it was just the beginning of our interactions in the ophthalmology world, mine as a student and then as Program Director of the Georgetown Ophthalmic Medical Technology Training Program.
Life is full of winding journeys. With the adversities during my life, I have learned that one of my values is fairness. Combined with my personality, it leads me to share (and overshare at times!) my knowledge and experiences with the intention to help others and ease their journey.
My journey from being a student in a formal ophthalmic training program, working in a large private practice, leading said training program for 11 years, and as a technician at MedStar Georgetown for the neuro, pediatric, and oculoplastic specialists allow me distinct and unique opportunities to share. Until recently, I didn’t see the creativity that I hold. Life is an incredible gift, and one of my unique purposes is to share my passion for teaching abillty with eye care professionals. All of this and more inspired me to begin the entrepreneurial chapter of life.
My ambitions are to teach and refine skill techniques by also providing the foundational science behind the skill. Taking classes with Eyes Rock will allow a variety of offices to level up their in-office training programs. We cannot get new technicians trained fast enough with the technician shortage. But when just the skill is taught, do this, do that, click here, click there, push this button…the science behind the skill is often missed, leaving a critical gap in knowledge in the technician.
I am excited to share my talent for breaking down long, complicated concept lectures into multiple short lessons. My class website will host the recorded lectures with audio tracks, worksheets, and practice problems. I am designing some hands-on activities and all of these things will help to serve a multitude of learning styles. One of the things I am thrilled to offer is that Eyes Rock courses will be accessible through an app, which will make learning on the go and accessing anywhere easier. What do you think, will you join me to level-up your refractions?
